Frequently asked questions about Spacie. Can't find what you need? Reach out below.

Spacie lives in your menu bar and listens for a single gesture: long-press the spacebar (or your custom hotkey). While you hold the key, Spacie records from your microphone. When you release, it transcribes your speech using the Whisper model running locally on your Mac, optionally formats the text with a local LLM, and pastes the result directly into whatever app you were typing in.

The entire pipeline — recording, transcription, formatting, and insertion — happens on-device in under a second on Apple Silicon.

Yes. Spacie Free gives you 25 transcriptions per day, forever, with no account required. That is enough for most people who use voice-to-text a few times an hour.

Spacie Pro ($8/month or $60/year) unlocks unlimited transcriptions, custom format templates, cloud sync, and priority model downloads. If you are a power user who dictates dozens of messages, emails, and documents a day, Pro is designed for you.

Spacie supports over 100 languages via the Whisper speech recognition model. Language is auto-detected from your speech — you do not need to configure it manually.

Code-switching (mixing languages within a single utterance) is also supported. For example, you can dictate a sentence that switches between English and Spanish, and Spacie will transcribe both correctly.

Absolutely. Spacie processes everything on your Mac. Your audio is never recorded to disk, never uploaded to a server, and never sent to any third-party API. The Whisper model and the formatting LLM both run locally.

If you create an account, we store only your email, daily usage counts, and synced templates (if enabled). We never have access to your transcription content. Read our full Privacy Policy for details.

Spacie needs two macOS permissions to function. You will be prompted to grant these on first launch, but you can also configure them manually:

  1. Accessibility — Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility and toggle Spacie on. This allows Spacie to detect the spacebar long-press and paste text into other apps.
  2. Microphone — Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and toggle Spacie on. This allows Spacie to capture audio for transcription.

If you accidentally denied a permission, you can re-enable it from the same System Settings panels.

Custom format templates are a Pro feature. To create one:

  1. Open Spacie from the menu bar and go to Settings > Formats.
  2. Click New Format.
  3. Give your format a name (e.g., "Slack Message" or "Email Reply").
  4. Write a prompt that describes how the text should be formatted. For example: Format as a professional email reply. Keep it concise and friendly.
  5. Save the format. It will now appear in your format picker when you release the spacebar.

If sync is enabled, your custom formats will be available on all your Macs signed in with the same account.

Yes. Spacie's core functionality — recording, transcription, and formatting — runs entirely on your Mac with no internet connection required. Once you have downloaded the Whisper model (a one-time download), everything works offline.

Features that require an internet connection include: creating an account, syncing format templates, managing your subscription, and downloading new or updated models.

You can cancel your Spacie Pro subscription at any time. There are two ways:

  1. From the app: Open Spacie, go to Settings > Account > Manage Subscription. This opens the Stripe customer portal where you can cancel.
  2. From the web: Visit your Stripe customer portal link (sent in your subscription confirmation email) or contact support@spacie.com and we will send you a direct link.

After cancellation, you retain access to Pro features until the end of your current billing period. Your account and data are preserved — you can resubscribe at any time.

Spacie requires macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later.

Apple Silicon (M1 or later) is recommended for the best experience. Transcription is near-instant on Apple Silicon thanks to the Neural Engine.

Intel Macs are supported but transcription will be slower (typically 2-4 seconds depending on the length of your utterance and your specific hardware). An Intel Mac with at least 8 GB of RAM is required.
